Laser and IPL Clinic / Salon Licensing
Current Situation
Under the previously applicable Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations,
all laser / IPL clinics offering treatments such as hair removal had
to register with the CQC. As of the 1st October 2010, however, the CQC no
longer regulates private sector clinics but rather is focussing its attention
on healthcare professionals.
Private sector laser / IPL clinics or beauty salons now have to apply to their respective local authorities for a Special Treatments Licence: Lasers and Intense Lights. Unfortunately, there is no general agreement on the requirements for the granting of such a licence by the different Local Authorities and many have not yet set their requirements. A number of authorities are, however, setting requirements which are closely similar to the previous CQC requirements which required clinics to have access to a Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) to produce a 'local rules' document and an Expert Medical Practitioner (EMP) to produce the 'treatment protocols' and provide ongoing support and advice. Additionally, all authorised users of the laser or IPL equipment must have safety training equivalent to at least the British Medical Laser Association 'core of knowledge'.

Core of Knowledge Laser Safety Training and Certification
At Lucid our 'Core of Knowledge' training course has been approved by the Britism Medical Laser Association (BMLA), and is run regularly at our training centre and ocassionally at other venues across the UK.
